Sometimes in our fast-paced lives we forget the true meaning of certain words which we see and hear on a daily basis. For example, the word nourish, what does it really mean? I know what you’re saying to yourself “of course I know what nourish means, nourish means to feed, to maintain life!” But if you look at the true meaning of the word, it can become the mantra to your new healthy eating habits and provide you with an easy way to turn over a new leaf on the road to real vitality.
So, what does nourish really mean?
The Farlex online Dictionary defines the word nourish as: “to sustain with food or nutriment; supply with what is necessary for life, health, and growth”. *
Nourish is also defined as a feeling: “to encourage, support or foster”. *
Every day we are bombarded with messages of eat this, don’t eat that, do more of this and less of that, this is better, healthier and on trend for all the promises of good health and wellbeing. As consumers, we take these messages all on board and in the end the promises don’t create the healthy change we are looking for and the only thing growing are our waist lines!!!
With Australian research suggesting that at current rates, over two thirds of Australians will be overweight by 2025 there is no better time than now to think about what real nourishment means.
So, the next time you look down at that highly processed triple stacked burger, large fries and a jumbo cup of bubbling sugar, or you grab a heath ball, throw back a protein smoothie with a number of superfood powders, and peel open a frozen low fat meal to reheat… think to yourself “is this really nourishing me?”
